The only optional extra is Home Assistant Cloud (~$10/mo) if you want the easiest remote app access and one-click voice-assistant linking, paid directly to Nabu Casa, not bundled into our fees. It funds the open-source platform your home runs on, and we recommend it. Our care plan is a separate, cancel-anytime service fee for monitoring, updates and support.
At home, never: everything runs locally. Away from home, the simplest path is Home Assistant Cloud (~$100/year, paid directly to Nabu Casa, funds the platform's development). The Companion app just works, and voice assistants link in one tap. Prefer zero cost? We can set up a free private VPN on your own account: no domain, no subscription, no technical knowledge needed beyond installing an app on your phone. It's yours to keep regardless of whether you use our services. We'll explain both options and set up whichever you prefer.
